Long before wildflower seed was something you could order with a click, it was something almost nobody grew on purpose. Wildseed Farms started in Fredericksburg back in 1983 with a simple, slightly stubborn idea: that Texas wildflowers deserved to be grown as a real crop, not just admired along the highway. That idea made us the original wildflower farm in the country — and more than four decades later, we're still the nation's largest working wildflower farm, with fields of bluebonnets, black-eyed Susans, and dozens of other natives growing right outside our door.
Pioneers Out of Necessity
There was no playbook for farming wildflowers commercially when we started. Row crops have a hundred years of equipment and know-how behind them. Wildflowers didn't. Everything about growing them at scale — how to plant native seed evenly across acres of ground, how to harvest something as small and stubborn as a bluebonnet pod, how to clean and process seed without losing it — had to be figured out here, in our own fields, through years of trial and error.
That's where our founder, John, made his mark. When the equipment he needed simply didn't exist, he built it himself — custom machinery designed from scratch to plant and harvest wildflower seed on a scale no one had attempted before. His inventions were resourceful enough, and unusual enough, that they eventually caught the attention of National Geographic, which featured his work as an example of the kind of homegrown ingenuity it takes to turn a wild plant into a real, sustainable crop. It's one of the parts of our history we're proudest of: necessity, a welding torch, and a lot of patience turned into an entire industry standard.
Grower and Seller — No Middleman
That pioneering streak shaped how we still do business today. We grow our own wildflower seed on our own land, harvest it, clean it, package it, and sell it directly — with no middleman in between. When you order seed from us, it isn't sourced from a broker or relabeled from somewhere else. It came from a field you could walk out and see, grown by people who've spent decades learning exactly what these plants need.
That matters more than it might seem. Wildflower seed that's been handled by multiple distributors before it reaches you can lose viability, get mixed with the wrong regional varieties, or simply cost more than it should. Being the grower and the seller means we control quality at every step, and it means the seed you plant is honest about where it came from.
Still Rooted in the Hill Country
We've grown a lot since 1983, but the passion behind it hasn't changed. We still believe wildflowers belong in gardens, pastures, and roadsides everywhere, and we still think the best way to make that happen is to grow the seed ourselves and put it directly in your hands.
