By midsummer, the Hill Country sun doesn't leave much room for shy plants. That's where cosmos come in. Tall, airy, and covered in blooms from June clear through the first fall frost, cosmos are one of the most forgiving flowers you can put in the ground — and one of our favorites here at the farm.
If you've walked our fields in late summer, you've probably seen them: feathery green foliage topped with pink, white, and deep crimson blooms swaying in the wind. They're not fussy about soil, they don't ask for much water once established, and pollinators can't get enough of them. For a Texas summer garden, that's about as good as it gets.
Why Cosmos Love Texas Heat
Cosmos are native to Mexico and Central America, so our long, hot summers suit them just fine. They actually prefer lean soil — too much fertilizer gives you tall, floppy plants with fewer flowers. A sunny spot and well-drained ground is really all they're after.
Planting Tips for This Time of Year
- Direct sow is best. Scatter seed straight into the garden after your last frost, once soil has warmed. Cosmos don't love being transplanted.
- Give them room. Thin seedlings to about 12 inches apart so they can branch out and breathe.
- Water to establish, then back off. Once seedlings are up and growing, cosmos are quite drought-tolerant — a real gift during a Texas August.
- Deadhead for more blooms. Snip spent flowers and you'll keep new ones coming well into fall.
- Let some go to seed. Cosmos self-sow readily, so leaving a few late blooms means volunteers next year.
